The debate between Glock and Smith & Wesson is as timeless a debate as Coke versus Pepsi, with loyal fans on both sides championing their preferred platform. In this installment of Glock vs Everything, we are putting the Glock 45 (9mm) head to head with the full size Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 Metal. Both guns have earned praise and professional adoption for their performance, reliability, and ergonomics, and this comparison aims to break down the nuances that set them apart from design and feel to real world shooting performance.

Both of these pistols reflect how their manufacturers respond to user demand. The Glock 45 emerged as a civilian evolution of the Glock 19X, blending a Glock 17 length grip with a Glock 19 length barrel to give shooters better leverage and recoil control while keeping the slide compact. Meanwhile, the Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 Metal was developed during the recent rise in all metal striker fired pistols and has been widely praised as the pinnacle of S&W’s lineup. Both guns have earned professional recognition, becoming go to choices for law enforcement, security teams, and military units.

One of the first things you notice when handling these pistols is how different the grip geometry feels in your hand. The Glock uses a steeper 22 degree grip angle and a slightly narrower frame, while the Smith & Wesson sits closer to an 18 degree angle with a wider profile, giving it a feel more reminiscent of the classic 1911. The texture is another obvious divider: the aggressive signature stippling on the M&P 2.0 allows for a much more secure grip than the Glock, especially under recoil or in wet conditions. However, that same texture can be rough on the hands and skin until it goes through a bit of a break in period. The trigger designs also diverge: the Glock ships with a bladed stock trigger, while the M&P’s newer offering uses a flat face shoe. In practice, the Glock’s trigger wall tends to break sooner, producing quicker splits, but the M&P’s flat face and take up feel smoother and more controlled to many shooters

In this regard, I would give the narrow head nod to the M&P. Glock’s stippling has improved across various generations, but it still lags behind many competitors in raw purchase. Where Glock evens the score is its massive, affordable aftermarket ecosystem; you can tailor a Glock into whatever you want, and that ubiquity may explain why the company has not leaned into ultra aggressive factory texturing. Smith & Wesson’s aftermarket support is growing, but it is not yet at Glock’s scale, so your choice might come down to whether you want the out of the box ergonomics and weight of the M&P or the endless customization options of the Glock.

Weight is also a noticeable factor at the range: the M&P 2.0 Metal clocks in around 30 ounces versus roughly 24 ounces for the Glock 45. That extra heft on the Smith & Wesson is immediately noticeable behind the trigger; it helps tame recoil and improves recoil management and smooths out follow up shots, but it also makes the gun feel more substantial during longer strings of fire.

We had one of our instructors put both pistols through a few comparison drills, and the results echoed what you tend to feel in real world shooting: Glock for speed, M&P for accuracy. The first drill, a cold start of 3 rounds, reload, then 3 more, had the Glock 45 finishing at 3.34 seconds with two C zone strikes and the rest A zone, while the M&P came in at 4.08 seconds with clean A zone hits. The second drill, a double feed malfunction clearing exercise, saw the Glock at 4.46 seconds again with two C zone shots versus the M&P’s 5.17 which produced all A zone hits. The final drill, a 1 reload 1 reload 1 sequence, had the Glock at 4.72 seconds with two C zone impacts and the M&P at 5.72 with all A zone hits.

Overall, the numbers were fairly close but consistent; the Glock proved to be the faster platform, while the Smith & Wesson edged out in stability and accuracy. It was such a close call that we may have to switch up the drills and run a part 2 of these trials to see if one platform can definitively pull ahead. In short, if you want speed, smooth ergonomics, and the largest aftermarket for custom work, the Glock is hard to beat. If you want out of the box purchase, a heftier metal platform that soaks up recoil, and a more planted feel with stricter shot placement, the M&P 2.0 Metal earns that narrow nod.

XTech MTX +2 on the S&W Shield: A Practical Test

Considering options for a quality concealed-carry pistol, I evaluated the Smith & Wesson Shield (9 mm) fitted with an XTech Tactical +2 MTX 9-round extended magazine. The results were clear: the +2 is a game changer. The flush-fit magazine measures 4 1/2 inches, while the XTech MTX +2 measures 5 1/8 inches. The drills: concealment to engagement

I ran three practical drills from concealment to test and compare performance: a 6-shot Bill Drill, a 3-shot/reload/3-shot drill, and a 6-target plate rack for transitions.

Bill Drill

In the Bill Drill I drew from concealment and ran six shots to the A-zone in 3.10 seconds with the extended mag versus 3.51 seconds with the flush-fit factory mag. The extended base lets my support hand acquire a firmer and more confident purchase during the draw, which helped me manage recoil and drive follow-ups faster.

Reload and transition work

The reload and transition work showed similar, measurable gains. In the 3-shot reload drill I clocked 4.17 seconds with the XTech +2 and 4.38 seconds with the flush mag. The added surface made magazine indexing and retrieval faster because there is more to grab on the hip. On the plate rack the extended mag cleared six targets in 4.67 seconds versus 5.32 seconds with the flush mag. The extra palm coverage allowed me to transition targets faster and more accurately, producing smoother follow-ups and cleaner target transitions.

Conclusion: definitive upgrade for the Shield

After testing the Shield with the XTech +2 / MTX 9-round magazine across multiple drills and real-world carry scenarios, the conclusion is clear: this is the definitive upgrade for the platform. When it comes to compact handguns, the Glock 19 has long been the gold standard, reliable, simple, and widely adopted. This Glocktober, we tested how it stacks up against some challengers on the market. First up is the Ruger RXM, a Glock-style design that promises many of the upgrades shooters usually install aftermarket, right out of the box.

RXM Ergonomics and Controls

The Ruger RXM comes with a slightly more aggressive grip texture, and the frame has a pronounced ledge that serves as a clear reference point for proper thumb placement and grip. Rounded edges on the grip improve comfort, and the undercut on the trigger guard helps achieve a higher, more natural grip. The trigger is a modest upgrade from the stock Glock trigger, and Ruger removed the signature hump at the lower part of the grip found on many stock Glocks.

The slide is cut to accept RMR, RMSc, and DDP footprints, giving plenty of options for optics. It features front and rear serrations, blacked-out rear sights, and a big-dot front night sight that will co-witness with most optics. The most notable upgrade is the Fire Control Insert, which allows full customization of the platform.

Specs at a Glance

On paper the two guns are very close. Unloaded weight is roughly 23.2 ounces for the Ruger RXM versus 23.63 ounces for the Glock 19. Magazine capacity is 15 rounds for both. Barrel length is 4.00 inches for the RXM versus 4.02 inches for the G19. Overall length measures 7.15 inches for the RXM compared with 7.36 inches for the Glock 19. These are small differences that, combined with the RXM’s factory ergonomics and optics-ready slide, make it feel like a Glock with many common upgrades already installed.

Range Tests and Drills

We put the RXM to the test against a few Glock 19s using three drills.

Six-Shot Plate Rack

The RXM posted a time of 6.19 seconds, clearing the rack in seven hits. A stock Glock 19 ran the same drill in 5.65 seconds. The noticeable difference came down to getting used to the RXM’s slightly different trigger and emphasizing proper grip pressure due to the RXM’s thinner handle. Neither result indicates a flaw; it is simply a matter of recognizing and adjusting to the platform differences compared with the commonly used Glock 19.

Throttle-Control Drill

This drill engaged 12 targets at varying distances and speeds. With the RXM the time was 14.09 seconds with 14 shots, including two makeup shots. With the Glock the time was 13.60 seconds with 13 shots, including one makeup shot. Again, the RXM’s slightly different trigger feel and slimmer grip required conscious attention to grip pressure and trigger prep. Those small neuromuscular adjustments accounted for most of the time difference rather than any mechanical shortcoming.

Six-Target Plate Rack with Three Reloads

The RXM finished this drill in 7.89 seconds while the Glock 19 finished in 7.50 seconds. The gap tightened as I shot more. As I became familiar with the RXM’s ergonomics and trigger, times moved closer, reinforcing that the differences were largely about adaptation rather than performance deficits.

Conclusion

The Ruger RXM brings useful factory upgrades to a familiar platform. Its ergonomics, optics-ready slide, and customization options make it an attractive alternative for shooters who want common enhancements without aftermarket modifications. In raw performance the Glock 19 still posted slightly faster times in my drills, but the RXM closed the gap as I adapted to its feel. For many shooters the decision will come down to how quickly they adapt and whether the RXM’s factory ergonomics and optics options match their preferences.

 

When it comes to concealed carry, I’ve experimented with several Glock models: the Glock 19, Glock 45, and even Glock-style clones like the Ruger RXM. But the Glock 26 is the one I always return to. It strikes the perfect balance—compact enough to disappear under clothing, yet substantial enough to handle like a true defensive pistol. Its reliability is well-documented, but what keeps me carrying it daily is the mix of size, durability, and magazine compatibility.

A quick reality check on size: the Glock 26 is a true subcompact. Overall length and other specs vary slightly between generations, but Gen 5 G26s measure around 6.4 inches in overall length and about 4.17 inches in height with a magazine inserted. Standard empty weight typically falls in the low- to mid-20-ounce range depending on generation and configuration. The platform ships with a 10-round flush magazine but accepts longer 15-, 17-, and even 33-round magazines when you want more capacity or grip length.

Not only does the Glock 26 accept a wide range of magazines, but adding a magazine sleeve (also called a MAG Adapt or adapter) can dramatically improve grip purchase, control, and shooting performance. That simple magazine swap effectively lets you turn a pocket-friendly G26 into a gun that handles like a Glock 19—or comes close to a Glock 17—without changing pistols. Insert a 15- or 17-round mag (or a sleeve-equipped version) into the 26 and the grip length, purchase, and control feel nearly identical to the larger models. When you need deep concealment, swap back to the flush 10-rounder and you’re instantly back to a true compact.

To move past theory and into practice, I ran a series of drills comparing the flush-fit 10-round magazine against a 15-round magazine fitted with the XTech Tactical MAG Adapt sleeve.

Bill Drill (six rounds from the draw)

With the flush Glock 26 magazine, I averaged in the high 2.70s to 3.00s, producing 4–6 inch groups. With the 15-round magazine and sleeve, times dropped into the 2.30s to 2.50s with groups closer to 4 inches. The difference came down to recoil control. The extra real estate gave my pinky a home, helped me establish a perfect master grip, and shaved valuable tenths off my draw-to-first-shot time.

“3 Reload 3” Drill

With the flush mag, I clocked 3.80 to 4.01 seconds. Using the 15-round magazine and sleeve, I consistently hit 3.45 to 3.52 seconds. The additional grip length made it faster to index and seat the magazine cleanly with less need for visual confirmation. The sleeve’s textured surface also eliminated occasional “false positives” when rushing shorter mags—a small detail that matters under pressure.

Double-Tap Target Transitions

The difference was immediate: far less muzzle flip, easier recoil management, and faster target transitions with the extended setup. Because my grip stayed consistent and high through recoil, I wasn’t fighting the gun. Instead, I was using the recoil to drive the pistol smoothly between targets. The flush 10-round setup felt like a compromise by comparison, forcing me to cup the base instead of locking in a strong grip.

After eight years of carrying Glocks and dozens of range sessions, I’ve concluded that the Glock 26 paired with a MAG Adapt 26→15 or MAG Adapt 26→17 sleeve is an ideal concealed-carry configuration for many shooters. The pistol provides the compact size and ruggedness you want for daily carry, while the sleeve is a simple, inexpensive upgrade that enhances control, speed, and comfort without permanently altering the pistol or compromising concealment. If you’re on the fence, run the drills—the difference is measurable and repeatable.

• Safety: The California P365 is only available with an ambi-manual safety, while the standard P365 is available with and without a manual safety.
• Optics Ready: The California P365 is optics ready with a Shield RMC-c slide cut, while the standard P365 is not. However, several optics-cut P365 variants are available.
• Sights: The California P365 ships with night sights called X-RAY3 Day/Night Sights. The standard P365 ships with a traditional white dot sight set-up. 
• Magazines: The California P365 only offers a flush-fit 10-round magazine and a pinky-extended 10-round magazine. The standard P365 ships with the same magazines, but Sig Sauer has additional options of 12-round, 15-round, 17-round, and 21-round magazines with spacers to fit the standard frame.
• Magazine Safety Disconnect: In order to have the P365 California added to the roster, Sig Sauer added a magazine safety disconnect. This is specific to the P365 California and not to any other P365s. This feature prevents the pistol from firing without a magazine loaded into the pistol. To make room for this feature, Sig Sauer modified their grip module. NOTE: The P365 California will not function with the required magazine disconnect in any other grip module outside the one on the pistol as shipped. 
• Loaded Chamber Indicator: To appease the California DOJ, Sig Sauer also added a loaded chamber indicator. This indicator can be seen from the top of the slide when a round is chambered in the pistol.
• Price: The sights and optic cut are the only functional upgrades the P365 California offers over the standard P365. The magazine disconnect and the loaded chamber indicators are necessary features for the P365 to be added to the roster. Due to this, the P365 California’s MSRP is $749, while the standard base P365 is $499 and the same sight package can be found around $549.

What Are the Best Sig P365 California Upgrades?

Are upgrades even possible with all the new changes to this California-compliant handgun? YES! You can upgrade your P365 California in two main areas: the grip and a red dot sight.

Grip Upgrades 

California users face a significant limitation regarding grip options compared to other regions. Outside of California, individuals have access to a wider variety of larger grip modules, including the Sig Sauer X/XL frame and the XMacro frame. Additionally, numerous aftermarket options are available. Sig Sauer also provides alternatives to enhance grip ergonomics, including extended magazines that contribute to a more complete grip experience.

Red Dot Sight Options

I’m still undecided about carrying a micro-compact with a red dot sight. However, I’ve noticed that with some practice, I am definitely more confident and quicker when engaging targets. The benefits of the red dot become more apparent with longer distances, but as a civilian, shooting from a distance is not my primary focus for self-defense.

Trijicon RMRcc

The Trijicon RMR®cc offers 3.25 and 6.5 MOA dot size options. It is extremely reliable, but the price is steep at over $600. 

Holosun 507k X2

The Holosun 507k X2 has become (to many) the minimum standard for carry/duty use in optics. And in my experience, I have to agree. They are a good value and they work. The only option in this model is a 2 MOA dot, which I personally have no issue with or problem locating when drawing the pistol. It will not stand up to a torture test against the Trijicon, but the average user doesn’t need that kind of durability. The online list MSRP is $341.16. At a street price of under $300, this would be my pick to mate with a new California P365. 

Vortex Viper

I want to love the Vortex Viper due to its lower profile compared to other products and lifetime warranty. At this point, it hasn’t won me over. I have to put more thought into finding the dot. I also had some issues with Vortex products and concluded they would rather exchange broken optics than build ones for serious use. The online MSRP is $369.99, but the local street price is around $250.

Sig Romeo Zero

If you want to stick with a Sig Sauer product, the Sig Romeo Zero is an option, but I have little experience with it. Some have warned me that the 3 MOA dot tends to lose “zero,” so there are trust issues here. The MSRP is $139.99 but you may find you get what you pay for.

Instead, it falls into a bit of a hybrid of generations. Glock classifies the Glock 43 as a slimline pistol.

Size Matters, Right?

The most noticeable difference from a 10,000-foot view of the guns is size. Sure, both are small guns but they are a fair bit different when we whip out a measuring tape. Size matters for several purposes and for concealed carriers the smaller the gun, the easier it is to hide.

The Glock 26 vs Glock 43 spec differences are clear, but it doesn’t seem major, does it? If you look at those specification tables and they don’t speak to you, don’t worry. The differences can seem minor, especially if you’ve never toted a firearm. The Glock 43 is much thinner, and while .28 of an inch doesn’t seem like much, it makes a big difference when the gun is both in your hand and in your waistband.

The extra width can make the gun less comfortable to carry, and that problem is magnified for smaller people. The thinner grip of the G43 can feel super comfy for shooters with smaller hands. The additional weight of the Glock 26 can help and hurt. It’s more weight to carry but creates less recoil.

Height and length will affect concealment. Smaller can be easier to conceal in most cases. For appendix carry some additional length can help conceal the weapon by helping push the grip rearward and reduce printing.

Capacity Matters Too

A big difference in those specs is capacity. If you’re all about capacity, then the Glock 26 vs. 43 argument is over for you. The Glock 26 wins with its 10-round stock capacity. If you do a plus one, it brings you eleven rounds. The Glock 43 maxes out at seven. The Glock 26 uses double-stack magazines, while the Glock 43 sticks to a single-stack design.

The Glock 26 can also use Glock 19, Glock 17, and even Glock 33 round magazines without a problem. With the Xtech Tactical grip extensions and MAG-19 and MAG-17 magazines, we can get not only extra capacity but a longer grip, which turns into more control.

The Glock 43 also has some options for more capacity. A few companies have released extended magazines, but they’ve been a bit lacking in reliability. Xtech produces a plus three baseplate that brings your capacity to nine rounds and extends the length slightly for greater control.

Still, at the end of the day, the Glock 26 will always hold more ammunition.

Accuracy

Accuracy can be tough to gauge with little guns. At the end of the day, we have to divide between practical accuracy and mechanical accuracy. Practical accuracy comes down to the user and their skill. Glock firearms are more than accurate for the average user. Most people will probably find themselves shooting with similar accuracy with either pistol.

The trigger pull, grip length, and sight radius are all very close, if not identical, in some cases. We can see a difference in accessories, specifically with the Glock Gen 5 MOS. The Gen 5 introduced an optics-ready Glock 26. Red dots make handguns easier to shoot.

Red dots eliminate sight radius issues, they eliminate sight alignment issues, and they provide a smaller aiming point that obscures less of the target.

The Glock 26 Gen 5 guns also come with Glock match-grade marksman barrel. This will provide great consistency and mechanical accuracy for the pistol.

Ergonomics

The two guns have nearly identical controls. The Glock 26 Gen 2, Gen 3, and Gen 4 are similar to the Glock 43. However, the Gen 5 features an ambidextrous slide-stop. Both guns feature a similar grip angle and design, but the Glock 26 will be a thicker gun overall.

Petite shooters will likely prefer the thinner grip of the Glock 43. Most folks will be fine with the Glock 26. One of the hidden benefits of the Glock 26 is the extra width. If you want less sharp recoil, go with the 26. The wider grip helps dissipate recoil over a wider area, which creates a smoother recoil impulse.

The Gen 3 and Gen 4 26 models feature finger grooves that can be a love-it or hate-it affair. I tend to side with the latter. The Gen 5 stitches the finger grooves and embraces a smooth grip with the new rough texture frame stippling. This rougher texture keeps the gun locked in your hands and helps with control.

The Glock 26 guns also feature interchangeable backstraps to make the gun better fit your hand. The 43 comes how it is, and that’s that. It’s tough to say one is better than the other overall because ergonomics are very subjective. In our Glock 26 Vs. A Clear Winner?

Is there a clear winner? Well, let’s review the facts we’ve established.

• The Glock 43 is easier to conceal.
• The Glock 26 is easier to shoot.
• The Glock 26 holds more ammo.
• The Glock 26 does have options not offered with the G43.
• Both guns aren’t limited to their stock magazine capacities.
• Folks with small hands will likely prefer the Glock 43.

Both guns have strengths and weaknesses, and ultimately, there isn’t a definitive better option. There are better options for you and for every individual. Weigh the pros and cons of each gun, consider your individual needs, and pull the trigger that feels best.

Anti-gun lawmakers in 14 states and the District of Columbia prohibit “high-capacity” magazines. These laws claim to reduce the carnage from mass shootings despite the lack of research backing them. Sadly, politicians enact such laws without any knowledge of guns or tactics and ignore entirely the fact that magazine size has only a negligible impact on the rate of fire. 

Please review the following information for your state to stay compliant and learn how to advocate for greater gun rights with your elected representatives. 

Executive Order Protecting Second Amendment Rights

President Trump issued an executive order “Protecting Second Amendment Rights” on February 7, 2025. Its purpose is to “end the federal government’s violation of Americans’ fundamental Second Amendment right to protect themselves, their families, and their freedoms.” 

According to a fact sheet issued by The White House: 

• This Executive Order will halt existing policies designed to curtail the clear right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms.
• The order directs the incoming Attorney General to immediately complete a specific review of all orders, regulations, guidance, plans, and other actions by the Biden Administration regarding firearms—listing several specific documents to be reviewed—and deliver a plan of action to the President to eliminate all infringements on Americans’ Second Amendment rights. 

There is no indication how or if this order will impact state gun magazine laws. 

Overview

The Current Law on California Gun Magazines 

So-called “high-capacity magazines” are designed to allow a shooter to fire multiple rounds without needing to reload. California law generally prohibits the sale of “large-capacity” magazines (CA Penal Code, § 32310). Possessing, selling, purchasing, giving away, importing, transporting, or manufacturing magazines holding more than ten rounds of ammunition is prohibited. 

The “generally” aspect is due to how the law is worded. The law currently bans certain types of “assault weapons” characterized by type, series, and model and according to the firearm’s general characteristics:

1. Category One specifies six so-called assault weapons by name. 
2. Category Two bans AK- or AR-type weapons. 
3. Category Three bans rifles, pistols, shotguns, and other firearms with specified characteristics, including magazines holding more than ten rounds. 

A careful review of the law text reveals that the magazine ban is only due to Category Three wording, which includes “high-capacity” magazines in the list of characteristics that make select firearms prohibited. Although it may seem circuitous, the courts have upheld it as banning magazines for any firearm holding more than ten rounds. 

U.S. District Court Judge Roger Benitez’s ruling in September 2023 stopped the state from enforcing its large-capacity magazine ban. That ruling is currently partially stayed, though the larger constitutional question remains: whether the government can restrict certain arms. The issue was argued again in March 2024, but no resolution was reached. 

Colorado 

The Centennial State restricts the capacity of firearm magazines to no more than 15 rounds. It is illegal to sell, transfer, or possess high-capacity magazines, defined as those holding more than 15 rounds for firearms (excluding shotguns), unless the individual can prove ownership of the magazine as of July 1, 2013, and has maintained continuous possession since that date.

• Colorado allows citizens to carry loaded handguns in their vehicles, but all other weapons transported in a vehicle must be unloaded. 
• The City of Boulder enacted Ordinance 5-8-2, making possessing any ammunition-feeding device that can hold more than 10 rounds illegal.

Connecticut 

Connecticut law defines “large capacity magazine” as “any firearm magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has the capacity of or can be readily restored or converted to accept more than ten rounds of ammunition.” 

• There is a grandfather provision for high-capacity magazines possessed before January 1, 2014. These magazines must be legally declared. 
• Persons moving into the state who own magazines holding more than ten rounds must render them inoperable, sell them to an authorized dealer, or remove them from the state within 90 days. 

Delaware

In 2022, Delaware implemented legislation prohibiting the manufacture, sale, purchase, receipt, transfer, or possession of “large-capacity magazines” (LCMs). This law aims to regulate firearms and enhance public safety by limiting access to these specific ammunition-feeding devices.

• An LCM under Delaware law is defined as any ammunition-feeding device capable of accepting, or that can readily be converted to hold, more than 17 rounds of ammunition.
• People with concealed carry permits are exempt. 

District of Columbia

Our nation’s capital has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, as befitting the place where anti-gun lawmakers thrive. DC prohibits the possession, sale, or transfer of “large capacity ammunition feeding devices,” whether or not they are attached to a firearm. 

• A “large capacity ammunition feeding device” is any magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device capable of holding more than ten rounds of ammunition or that can be easily modified to accommodate that amount. 
• Most DC residents cannot legally possess ammunition. 

Illinois 

Illinois law prohibits the manufacture, delivery, sale, or purchase of rifle or shotgun magazines that hold more than ten rounds of ammunition. Additionally, it is illegal to have a magazine for a handgun that exceeds 15 rounds.

• On January 10, 2023, Governor JB Pritzker signed Public Act 102-1116, the Protect Illinois Communities Act, into law. The Act regulates the sale and distribution of assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and switches in Illinois and went into effect immediately upon signing. 
• Individuals who possessed assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and other devices listed in the Act before it took effect are required to submit an endorsement affidavit through their Firearm Owner’s Identification Card account by January 1, 2024.

Hawaii 

Hawaii prohibits “[t]he manufacture, possession, sale, barter, trade, gift, transfer, or acquisition of detachable ammunition magazines with a capacity in excess of ten rounds which are designed for or capable of use with a pistol.” 

• Note that this law applies only to large-capacity magazines designed for or capable of use with a handgun.
• No pre-owned “large capacity magazines” are exempted. 

Maryland

The Old Line State prohibits the “manufacture, sale, offer for sale, purchase, receive, or transfer of a detachable magazine that can hold more than ten rounds of ammunition for a firearm.” 

• Current and retired law enforcement offers are exempt. 
• Some arguments over wording in the law exist, but it is a slippery slope. 

Massachusetts

The Bay State defines “large capacity feeding devices” in Title XX, Chapter 140, Section 121, as a “fixed or detachable magazine, box, drum, feed strip or similar device capable of accepting, or that can be readily converted to accept, more than ten rounds of ammunition or more than five shotgun shells.” 

• A grandfather provision allows ownership of such magazines purchased before September 13, 1994. 
• A new 2024 law (H 4885) vastly expands gun and magazine ownership restrictions, including requiring new and current residents to register all firearms. 

New Jersey

The Garden State prohibits “large capacity magazines,” which it defines as “A box, drum, tube or other container which is capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition to be fed continuously and directly therefrom into a semi-automatic firearm.” 

• A bill removing the capacity limit for gun magazines (NJ S2488) was introduced in the legislature on May 12, 2022, and is currently awaiting review (October 29, 2024) by the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee. 
• The current law reduced the previous capacity limit from 15 to 10 in 2018. 

New York 

The Empire State prohibits the manufacture, transportation, disposal, and possession of any “large-capacity ammunition feeding device,” which New York law defines as “a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip or similar device that:

1. Has a capacity of or that can be readily restored or converted to accept more than 10 rounds of ammunition
2. Is obtained after Jan. 15, 2013, and has a capacity of or can be readily restored or converted to accept more than 10 rounds of ammunition.” 

• New York’s SAFE Act initially lowered the magazine capacity to seven rounds, but this provision was deemed unconstitutional, so the law reverted back to allowing up to ten rounds. 
• The SAFE Act also removed the exemption for “large capacity magazines” manufactured prior to September 13, 1994. 

Oregon

In November 2022, Oregon voters passed Ballot Measure 114, titled the “Reduction of Gun Violence Act,” which now generally prohibits the manufacture, importation, possession, use, purchase, sale, and transfer of so-called “large-capacity magazines” that are capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

• The measure was put on hold after a Harney County Circuit Court Judge ruled that the voter-backed gun law violated the state constitution. 
• On March 12, 2025, a three-judge panel with the Oregon Court of Appeals reversed that decision and reinstated Measure 114.
• The law does not go into effect immediately. 35 days have been given to the plaintiffs to appeal to the supreme court and they have stated their intentions to do so.

Rhode Island

The Ocean State prohibits “the possession, sale or transfer of any feeding device capable of holding, or readily able to be extended to hold, more than 10 rounds of ammunition to be fed continuously into a semi-automatic firearm.” 

• Owners of magazines holding more than ten rounds face penalties of up to five years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines. 
• A federal appeals court upheld the restrictive Rhode Island law in 2024. 

Vermont

The Green Mountain State law defines a “large capacity ammunition feeding device” as “a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept:

(A) more than 10 rounds of ammunition for a long gun; or
(B) more than 15 rounds of ammunition for a hand gun.” 

• A grandfather provision allows larger capacity magazines that were lawfully possessed on or before April 11, 2018. 
• Other exemptions exist for law enforcement officers and competitive shooters. 

Virginia

The Commonwealth of Virginia has no law specifically prohibiting “large capacity” magazines for firearms. However, state law does prohibit “assault firearms,” which are defined as “any semi-automatic centerfire rifle or pistol which expels single or multiple projectiles by action of an explosion of combustible material and is equipped at the time of the offense with a magazine which will hold more than 20 rounds of ammunition or designed by the manufacturer to accommodate a silencer or equipped with a folding stock.” 

• This wording precludes owning or using magazines holding more than 20 rounds. 
• Recent attempts to enact stricter legislation concerning magazine capacity have been defeated. 

Washington

Since 2022, the Evergreen State has prohibited the manufacture, importation, distribution, selling, and offering for sale of rifle and pistol magazines that hold more than ten rounds. 

• The Washington Supreme Court heard arguments on January 14, 2025, about whether a state ban on selling or manufacturing large-capacity magazines, which hold high rounds of ammunition, violates the Second Amendment or the state constitution’s right to bear arms for self-defense. As of March 15, 2025, no decision has been made.

• A lower court found this restriction unconstitutional based on the United States Second Amendment on April 8, 2024. 
• In July 2024, the State Supreme Court ruled that the ban would remain in force while further legal action continued.

Be Aware of Local Gun Magazine Restrictions 

Other states do not specifically ban or prohibit “high-capacity” magazines or restrict magazine capacities to a limited amount. However, some local municipalities may have their own laws. 

For example, Ohio has no state restrictions on magazine capacity. Still, the City of Columbus enacted Ordinance 3176-2022, which made the previously lawful possession of gun magazines that hold 30 or more rounds of ammunition illegal. However, that law is being challenged and will go before the state Supreme Court. 

Check with your local laws to ensure you remain compliant with all laws in your area.
